With PDMS drawing in design institutes today, it is possible to create single-line diagrams in which fittings, valves, and pipes are all distinguished from one another. Can the number of pipe joints that need to be welded be calculated directly? The pipes on site vary in length, and there may be joints, but can PDMS provide a reference in terms of order of magnitude?
It’s possible, but the system needs to be configured first; it’s possible to enter weld sequence numbers in the ISO diagram, count the number of welds, and automatically calculate the length of the pipe sections between the welds.
To add, PDMS is actually a database-driven software; as long as you are familiar with its database, you can essentially do anything you want to do. However, the downside is that it uses a dedicated database, which increases the learning burden on users. It would be great if it could take advantage of general-purpose databases such as Oracle or SQL Server, just like SmartPlant 3D does, thereby achieving the best of both worlds. However, overall, even though PDMS can be used to consolidate welds, it is more widely applied in the design field – for tasks such as modeling, database creation, collision detection, and material consolidation. Construction companies seem to rarely use it; the standard approach remains based on the single-line diagrams provided by design firms, which are used for statistics, material consolidation, welding joint numbering, and installation. There is a disconnect between the engineering applications of PDMS and its use here. According to the information provided by some engineering companies, PDMS has been used to mark weld numbers, to simulate large-scale lifting operations, to manage the distribution and storage of materials in accordance with the installation schedule for pipelines, to keep track of the labor force, machinery usage, and auxiliary materials required for installation, and to enable visual monitoring of progress using project management software. There are doubts as to whether, under the current EPC system, design institutes or engineering companies will engage in such an in-depth involvement in the construction process

That’s absolutely right; it’s already a great effort for design institutes to use PDMS for modeling. To achieve such a high level of sophistication, we’ll likely need to raise our design skills to an even higher level first. But this is because we didn’t use PDMS properly; it’s not a problem with PDMS itself, right?
The number of weld passes and statistics on weld diameter are of little significance. The premise is that you have already modeled it in PDMS
Although a long time has passed since that post, I am now facing issues related to solder joint counting as well. I would like to ask how to determine the number of solder joints or display it on a single-line diagram Are you creating plugins or making settings in the library?
