Our company has 6 liquid ammonia booster pumps of Japanese manufacture, which are used to transfer liquid ammonia from the ammonia tank to the urea production system. The mechanical seals on these pumps often fail, resulting in high maintenance costs. Several leaks have occurred, but fortunately they were addressed in time, preventing any major accidents or losses. We plan to replace these pumps gradually; we are wondering whether shielded pumps would be a good option or dry gas seal pumps. We would appreciate some advice from those with more experience.
Is the pump used by LZ a centrifugal pump or a piston pump? Is the mechanical seal single-seal or double-seal, and what is the flushing method? Is it mainly the sealing ring that gets damaged due to mechanical seal failures? Personal opinion: If there’s a problem, one should first turn to the manufacturer, as they have the responsibility and obligation to help resolve it, especially since it’s a Japanese-made product! It must not be due to issues with operation or changes in operating conditions; in that case, you can seek compensation from the manufacturer! :lol
Changing the mechanical seal to a series configuration will do. Nitrile rubber or polytetrafluoroethylene can be used for the sealing ring.
It is better to choose a shielded electric pump: it is fully sealed, leak-free, offers good safety, and has a long service life.
Both shielded pumps and magnetic pumps are suitable. It is likely caused by medium crystallization.
