We have a heat exchanger that generates superheated steam at 1.6 MPa and a temperature of around 250 degrees. Is it feasible for the company to require that the conductivity of soft water be kept below 5?
It is possible; by using a two-stage reverse osmosis membrane system, the conductivity can easily reach 5, or even lower.
It’s not about whether conductivity below 5 is acceptable; rather, it’s about whether the equipment will scale up at around 5, resulting in the need for cleaning. Although the company requires a value below 5, our water treatment workshop generally keeps it at 5, and sometimes it even exceeds this level.
It’s 5 us/cm (it should be μS; since it’s difficult to type, it’s written as u). This value is sufficient for safety purposes – generally, the conductivity of lightly desalinated water does not exceed 50, while that of desalinated water (or silicon-removing water) does not exceed 5. The soft water mentioned by the original poster is likely to refer to desalinated water; truly soft water has a higher conductivity than lightly desalinated water. Soft water is simply treated to remove hardness, and it represents the lowest level of chemical treatment. What the original poster said about keeping the conductivity below 5 is absolutely fine; such water has a very high quality
In some places, the conductivity is expressed in μm/cm; how is this converted to us/cm?
