Following preliminary technical evaluations and design work, the key scientific and technological project of the group company – the research on SAGD time-lapse seismic technology for Block Shuyi in the Liaohe Oil Field – commenced earlier this month. This represents the first time in the world that seismic monitoring tests of this scale have been carried out on onshore oil and gas reservoirs. As of January 20, the testing tasks for over 1,000 excitation points have been completed, and all other tasks are progressing smoothly. In the thermal recovery test area of Area 1 in Shu, this project covers a total area of 5.17 square kilometers, with the construction area reaching 24.98 square kilometers. According to researchers from the Liaohe Oilfield, time-lapse seismic technology is a cutting-edge approach in international geophysical exploration. Through multiple repeated surveys, it enables a detailed description of the changes in reservoirs during the thermal recovery of heavy oil, providing valuable guidance for adjusting oil and gas development strategies. The conduct of such large-scale time-lapse seismic monitoring experiments on oil and gas reservoirs in complex onshore areas is unprecedented on an international scale. This experiment will significantly enhance the level of theoretical research and practical application of time-shift seismic technology in our country, and establish a comprehensive set of technologies for acquisition, processing, interpretation, and development suited to the characteristics of continental sedimentation, as well as industrial application standards. At the same time, as China’s largest heavy oil production base, the Liaohe Oil Field faces severe challenges in terms of resource replacement after years of exploration and development; there is an urgent need to find remaining oil reserves and improve recovery rates. Therefore, this experiment is of great significance for increasing oil reserves and maintaining stable production in the oil field. To achieve breakthroughs in the research of this cutting-edge technology, the Geophysical Exploration Company of Liaohe Oilfield has increased its efforts in scientific and technological innovation in recent years. Taking into account the geological structure characteristics of the thermal recovery test area in Area 1, this company carried out various preliminary research tasks, including laboratory core testing, computer-based forward modeling, and the development of test plans. It conducted thorough research and evaluation of different options, and developed high-precision seismic data acquisition techniques. The company has mastered 3D seismic acquisition and processing methods using large grid sizes, small element sizes, and wide azimuth ranges. Its capabilities in quantitative analysis of the quality of seismic data acquisition and in monitoring the quality of 3D seismic data also rank among the highest in China, laying a solid foundation for moving this project into the practical phase of field data collection.
