Hello everyone! I would like to ask how superheated steam and saturated steam are distinguished from each other. Thank you!
When all the water in the wet saturated steam vaporizes, it becomes dry saturated steam; at this point, the temperature of the steam remains at the boiling point. If saturated steam is further heated, raising its temperature above the boiling point, the steam obtained at this point is called superheated steam. The steam generated by boilers in the thermoelectric industry is superheated steam; it contains no moisture, as the steam is needed to drive the blades of the turbine in order to generate power that powers the generator. If the steam contains moisture, it can damage the blades during high-speed operation and cause accidents, which is not allowed; therefore, superheated steam must be free of moisture. Steam that contains moisture can only be called saturated steam. Additionally, superheated steam has a color that is somewhat similar to blue; ordinary steam appears white.
There is a balance between water and water vapor; at a certain temperature, there corresponds a certain pressure of water vapor, and this temperature is the saturation temperature of water at that pressure. Steam at a certain pressure corresponds to water at a certain temperature; this pressure is the saturated vapor pressure of water at that temperature. There is always a one-to-one relationship between saturated vapor pressure and temperature. When the temperature of steam exceeds the saturation temperature corresponding to that steam pressure, the steam is superheated steam.
It is absolutely correct that the upper section makes a distinction between hot steam and saturated steam based on their definitions. There are also significant differences in their uses: aside from use for heat tracing and heating, such as in stripping and tower steam injection, superheated steam is generally used to prevent steam from carrying water. The temperature of steam is primarily related to its own pressure; the higher the pressure, the higher the temperature. There is no close relationship between the temperature of steam and its superheat; there is no inherent connection.

Well, that’s good. Generally, saturated steam is sufficient for purposes such as heat tracing and heating; however, superheated steam is needed when injecting steam into a distillation tower.
