Nanhua is the cradle of the sulfuric acid industry, having trained a large number of professionals for this sector in China. I recall that in the 1970s, an operator from Nanhua’s sulfuric acid production plant became the director of a sulfuric acid plant in Suzhou.
The elderly miss the past, hence they are conservative; Speak wisely; don’t dwell on the past! Remember, an old basket will eventually break; so what’s the point of thinking about it once it’s broken? Besides the design institutes and research institutes, does Nanhua have any experts in the sulfuric acid industry?
That machine operator who turned off the machines was surnamed Wang; he later became a senior engineer. He is now 70 years old but still works at Suzhou Shuangshi.
Nanhua is currently the leading organization in the sulfuric acid industry association, but to be honest, there is still a lot of work to be done by this association – it’s not as simple as just holding an annual meeting once a year. For example, it seems that many control and monitoring methods used in sulfuric acid production processes have not yet become industry standards; the design parameters for many new types of equipment are still not included in the design manuals for sulfuric acid production, and what we see are still relatively traditional types of equipment.
In 1929, Fan Xudong took charge of the Nanjing Sulfuric Acid Plant, which was considered the largest chemical plant in the Far East at that time. It employed renowned scientific and technical experts such as Hou Debang and Jiang Shengjie. By 1937, a Nanjing Sulfuric Acid Plant covering an area of 133 hectares and ranking first in the Far East was completed and put into operation, producing China’s first batch of fertilizers – Red Triangle brand sulfuric acid.
By reviewing the past, one can gain new insights; by studying history, one can draw wisdom. Looking back at the development history of the sulfuric acid industry, understanding its path and knowing the direction forward is of great benefit to the workers in this industry.

Nanhua’s mistake 1: In the 1980s, a 200,000-ton sulfur-based sulfuric acid production plant (System 6) was built; it stopped operating after just a few years due to losses caused by rising sulfur prices, and was eventually shut down and scrapped. I worked there during my university days. 2. In the 1980s, there was a 200,000-ton sulfuric acid production facility using pyrite (System 7); due to abnormal operation of the electrostatic precipitator in the boiling furnace (without a cyclone), difficulties arose and closed-loop pickling could not be achieved. It has now been converted to a 250,000-ton sulfur-based sulfuric acid production facility. 3. The 240,000 tons of ammonium phosphate produced in the 1980s had to stop production right after it began operation due to losses caused by rising prices of imported phosphoric acid; 10 years later, it was replaced by sulfur-based compound fertilizers. In the 1990s, large-scale fertilizer production took place (300,000 tons of synthetic ammonia and 520,000 tons of urea). A classmate from Nanhua told me that synthetic ammonia was produced using asphalt; the investment required was in the billions, and since there wasn’t enough funding, people from across the province contributed money – I contributed 1,000 yuan. Later, the urea production equipment was sold, and synthetic ammonia production switched to using coal instead. After such struggles, Nanhua suffered severe losses and continued to incur deficits year after year; it is hoped that Nanhua will have good luck in the new century.

You can’t put it that way; after all, a company needs various types of talents – those who are practical as well as those who can think more abstractly. There need to be technical experts who can present logical arguments, as well as workers who are skilled in operating machinery. As for what positions one can hold and what career prospects exist, that depends on individual effort and opportunities. After all, in the 1970s and 1980s, there weren’t many technicians specializing in sulfuric acid production, and some of them ended up working in the workshops. For example, a technician from a design institute worked as an operator at the Nanhua Phosphate Fertilizer Factory; later, he returned to the design institute to work as a project manager for sulfuric acid production projects. The restructuring of Su Jing Group was unique – something that has no precedent and likely won’t be repeated in the future. So, considering various factors, some of those technical professionals found other paths for themselves. As far as I know, they’re all doing well now. I guess Yan Zhi Li also must be living well. Only when people are happy can their confidence show through in their words.

Nanhua has indeed made significant contributions to the sulfuric acid industry in New China, but it shouldn’t always consider itself the best. As mentioned above, Nanhua has also faced many failures; after all, it isn’t at the world-class level yet

Songsh*, it’s really a shame to see someone like you leave Suzhou Shuangshi. Xu also regrets it deeply now; Shuangshi currently only produces sulfuric acid and caustic soda. Although it is still classified as a fine chemicals manufacturer, in reality it no longer has any products that fall under the category of fine chemicals. All Shuangshi can do now is expand its production of sulfuric acid and caustic soda. This cycle of resentment – when will it end? Nanhua can no longer keep up with the trends in acid production; its elimination is only a matter of time. Just wait and see. But one thing we must acknowledge is that they have indeed made a tremendous contribution to our country’s acid production industry.
Existence is reasonable! Everyone and every company has its own vitality. Companies that have survived for a hundred years are few; how glorious was Rockefeller back in those days? What was the outcome? The key is that we must keep working hard so as not to be eliminated by society. We need to find a way to make a living and contribute something to society.
