Hello everyone. I majored in equipment engineering and graduated in 2007. I work at a design institute, but there’s very little work available for those in our field. So I want to learn craftsmanship, but everyone is busy. I want to learn on my own; I’ve asked for time off. Where should I start? Please share some suggestions. First, thank you all, seniors!

I have been working at a design firm for over 12 years now. We have had cases similar to yours as well; based on my experience, I suggest you learn pipe fitting. The process engineering field covers too many diverse and extensive topics. A certain foundation in theoretical knowledge is necessary. Those in the equipment field usually have no prior experience with concepts like chemical engineering principles, so it’s difficult to get started. But the piping is much better, and equipment professionals are generally quite familiar with materials. As long as you are familiar with the relevant standards and learn some basic knowledge of piping, it should be easy to get started; what’s left is gaining experience over time. The key is whether they assign you the task of handling piping work. It’s not possible to just study piping on your own and then be able to do this job; it’s ultimately a matter of task allocation. As long as your supervisor assigns you piping work, there’s no problem – you can learn. But if you’re not given such an opportunity at all, what’s the use of learning on your own? You can’t go to a new employer and say, “I know how to handle piping, but I’ve never worked on any piping projects.” It’s relatively easy to get started with piping work, but it’s not just a matter of knowing how to use software; those who work with piping need to have a good sense of spatial imagination. Given a layout diagram, they should be able to visualize in their mind how the pipes will be arranged. Your question isn’t what you need to learn, but what kind of job you can get. As long as you can manage to get it, it’s never too late to learn it; but if you can’t get it, then learning it will be in vain.
I think you should first go to the site, either by entering the devices designed by seniors or by going there yourself, and thoroughly examine the designs you’ve created to identify any aspects that were not taken into account during construction and actual production, as well as any impractical elements. By combining theory with practice, you can improve your work. Through this process, you will learn the relevant techniques; learning on the ground will be faster for you, as you already have a theoretical foundation in processes and equipment. If you’re really idle, then you might as well take the initiative to get close to the more experienced workers and help them out with some tasks. Observe first, then take action; ask the experienced workers questions and try to please them a bit. I believe this way you can make friends and also gain knowledge... When I first started working, I always felt very idle too – everyone else was extremely busy, and no one assigned me any work. The key is to learn as much as possible; the more experience you gain, the better it will be.
Communicate more in the field of marine engineering, study more technical books on your own, and gradually you will achieve good results!
I think the equipment is great too. I am a process engineer, and I took on the role of equipment engineer for a while in a project; it was quite challenging for me. In fact, any major that is mastered well has a bright future. In my opinion, there is much for equipment engineers to learn; they need to be highly proficient in areas such as materials, stress, equipment manufacturing, inspection, quality assurance, and so on.
