I have been in a design role for several years now, and having seen the original design institutes turn into engineering companies, I thought that the future direction of such institutions would be to become production units.
Design is inseparable from production! The transformation of design institutes into production units or their integration with such units should be a normal thing. Today’s strong companies all possess strong R&D and design capabilities; only in this way can they remain competitive in the market.

I think it is a trend for design institutes to evolve into engineering companies, but becoming an engineering company does not mean having to become a production unit. There seems to be a significant difference between the two, though I can’t specify exactly why; it might be related to their scope of operations. As far as I know, Sinopec Luoyang Petrochemical Engineering Company (commonly referred to as “Luoyang Institute”) and Sinopec Engineering Construction Company (commonly referred to as “Beijing Institute”) cannot really be considered production units.

Engineering companies are not production units; they represent a development trend in which traditional design institutes shift from focusing solely on design to adopting a more integrated approach that encompasses design, procurement, and construction.
In the past, design institutes were mainly engaged in providing technical services, with design being their core focus. Today’s engineering companies tend to focus on general contracting for projects, moving increasingly towards the EPC model; however, China has not yet reached the level of turnkey project delivery. The former has a relatively single source of profit, and the level of practical application is insufficient, which can make it seem overly theoretical. The latter has multiple sources of profit; for example, design fees, the profit margin from purchases. Since new users are often not familiar with the equipment, engineering companies that specialize in EPC projects have expertise in such equipment. Over time, they are able to establish their own supplier networks and gain access to relevant information, which allows them to acquire high-quality products at lower costs. The savings resulting from this constitute one of their substantial sources of profit. However, this also has its problems: it moves further and further away from research and development in technology, focusing instead on more concrete aspects such as the construction of supporting engineering infrastructure. In the past, our design institutes would absorb foreign technologies and then develop their own, through things like adapting proprietary processes, technology packages, and patents for domestic use; nowadays, no one does such things any more – it’s more practical to focus on actual engineering work. . . The future development of design institutes should see a polarization: one direction is toward technical research – the development of process package technologies, while the other is toward engineering practice – delivering turnkey projects that cover device design, construction, and commissioning. Yet these two areas are closely interconnected, as the problems that arise in engineering practice require research in the former field to find theoretical solutions or approaches, while the research conducted in the former field needs the opportunities provided by engineering practice for practical validation. That’s roughly how I understand it. As a technical professional, there are generally two paths for personal development: becoming an expert or becoming a leader. Whether to pursue a master’s or a PhD depends on one’s own decision. .

Our products are mainly used in petroleum and chemical industries, oil refining, natural gas projects, both domestically and internationally, and we supply them to engineering companies both at home and abroad. We are their supplier; they usually engage in EPC or EPCM projects and need to purchase a large amount of equipment. It’s great to work with them, as we can grow together as they develop
