Our factory uses ammonia-containing wastewater for the distillation of concentrated ammonia solution (>=20%). The storage tanks and pipelines are made of carbon steel without any anti-corrosion treatment. Production has been going on for a month now, and when the finished ammonia solution is taken out from the pipelines in use, the following phenomenon occurs: initially, it is a clear and transparent liquid with a slight yellow tint, but after a few minutes, the liquid becomes slightly turbid, as if there are fine particles present, and its color also darkens a little; The finished ammonia solution in the storage tank is red-brown; after sampling and allowing it to stand for a certain period of time, a red-brown precipitate forms, while the supernatant is a colorless and transparent solution. It is now certain that iron is present in the final ammonia solution; we just want to determine whether that reddish-brown precipitate is indeed iron hydroxide, and whether the slightly soluble substance is also iron hydroxide. How can it be identified

It doesn’t matter; the sediment should mainly consist of iron tetraoxide. I’ve been driving for just over a month, and the sediment present now is rust inside the pipes. When the ammonia concentration is high, the equipment undergoes significant alkaline cleaning. I was lazy when cleaning the device and started driving before it was thoroughly cleaned. :P
