Our unit’s coking plant consists of two furnaces and four towers, with a processing capacity of 1 million tons per year. Given the current sluggish market conditions, we plan to limit production. May I ask: what is the range of load adjustment possible for this coking plant? What should be noted when making adjustments?

Operators report that the processing volume has a direct impact on the flow rate of the furnace tubes in the coking furnace, which can lead to coking of these tubes; therefore, it is not advisable to make adjustments. However, the processing volume is affected by the market, which directly impacts the operational efficiency of the facility. How should this be dealt with?
1. Without wanting to bring the entire installation to a complete stop, one heating furnace can be shut down first, which reduces the processing capacity by half. 2. Reduce the feed rate of the furnace tubes in each heating furnace; based on what you’ve described, the feed rate to the heating furnaces in your facility can be reduced to 20 tons per hour. At the same time, increase the amount of water (steam) supplied to the heating furnaces in order to raise the flow rate of the medium inside the tubes, being careful to prevent the furnace tubes from overheating. 3. I have experience in knowing that the operating flexibility of the distillation tower can meet the requirements for reducing output. 4. It’s strange that all coking plants are striving to increase their production capacity; with a sluggish market, are you planning to limit production?

The coking market as a whole is performing well, but currently there is a shortage of residue resources in the Shandong market, leading to rising prices that are affecting the profitability of the plants. Therefore, we have adopted a strategy of reducing production volume by 10% to lower the processing load.
