For built-in reboilers, the skirt height only needs to take into account the cavitation issue of the bottom discharge pump. For external vertical siphon reboilers, the skirt height must consider both the installation of the reboiler and pump cavitation, though pump cavitation is the main factor here. In my opinion, for siphon reboilers, as long as there is not too large a difference between the installation height of the reboiler and the liquid level in the reactor vessel, it is always possible to automatically adjust the circulation rate in response to changes in the liquid level in order to achieve the desired outcome. Generally speaking, for vertical siphon reboilers, the optimal installation height is such that the upper tube sheet is at or about 100 MM above the normal liquid level in the vessel. Of course, since the liquid level can be adjusted, changes in this level will affect the circulation rate of the reboiler, which in turn affects the vaporization fraction; this, in turn, impacts the heat transfer coefficient of the reboiler.
