Shell transfers coal gasification technology again

Shell recently announced that it has signed a gasification technology licensing agreement with Henan Hebi Coal and Electricity Responsibility Co., Ltd. for a 600,000-ton methanol project. This is Shell’s 16th gasification technology licensing contract signed in China. 　　Shell’s gasification technology is a clean way of using coal to produce syngas that can be burned cleanly, for use in power generation or as a raw material for the production of chemical products and fertilizers. Shell’s gasification technology has been transferred to several Chinese companies through licensing agreements for use in the production of fertilizers, hydrogen, and methanol. To date, five units have been successfully put into operation, including the coal gasification joint venture built in Yueyang, Hunan, with Shell and Sinopec each investing 50%. 　　On the same day, Shell China Group also announced the establishment of the Shell China Limited Clean Coal Service Center in Beijing. The center is composed of 20 engineers with various professional backgrounds, including process engineering, equipment engineering, control systems, as well as materials and corrosion protection engineering. It is understood that the center will support Shell’s gasification technology licensing and investment projects in China, providing technical support throughout the period from trial operation and commissioning to actual operation, as well as helping to improve factory efficiency. In addition, it will also cover troubleshooting to support the implementation of best operational practices, as well as the optimization of plants and devices, along with specialized research and operational monitoring. 　　Lin Haoguang, head of Shell China Group, said that the establishment of Shell China Limited’s Clean Coal Service Center reinforces Shell’s commitment to its customers, as well as its dedication to supporting China in developing clean coal utilization methods in order to achieve sustainable and rapid growth.
