Viscosity-reducing cracking, especially for smaller units, has seen a lot of adoption this year. In the Shandong region, particularly in areas such as Dongying and Weifang, feedstocks include catalytic slurry, residue from large refineries, ethylene tar, used engine oil, and so on. It is understood that about 25% can be obtained from gasoline and diesel distillates. There is also paraffin oil and residual residue oil, all of which have a softening point of over 65, and can be sold as asphalt. The benefits are very good. Solvent deasphalting: For a capacity of 300,000 units, I estimate that the main installation will cost around 35–40 million yuan (using mixed C4 as a solvent). Its viability lies in the price difference between residue oil and wax oil; it becomes profitable when this difference exceeds 800 RMB. The oil removal yield cannot be generalized; it depends on the raw material. So, I won’t go into too much detail about the specific benefits. Another key issue is the disposal of deoiled asphalt, which requires proper research. One must take into account the constraints of the market; they are too great. Overall, leaching remains a processing route for heavy oil that is worth developing. :lol
My old plant used a combined process of 500,000 tons per year of visbreaking and 800,000 tons per year of solvent deasphalting to process residue oil; the visbreaking unit stopped operating last week, as the combined approach wasn’t very profitable, and the main issue was the low price of fuel oil.
