I’m a newcomer in the installation field; please share your views on the importance of on-site work for personal development!
For those in the engineering field, an extremely important skill is the ability to solve problems on-site; this capability has no direct correlation with educational background or theoretical knowledge.
As a beginner, learn from experienced masters as much as possible*. For installation work, a high level of theoretical knowledge is not required, but it is essential to have the ability to remain calm and make sound judgments when dealing with problems on site. Moreover, communication skills are important as well, in order to maintain good relationships with all parties involved. All of these require time to accumulate and mature. Without further ado, let’s take an example. It seems simple: what is the minimum distance between the centerline of a DN50 tee and the valve flange under normal conditions? Why is it this distance? Can it be reduced? If so, how?
On-site experience is merely a reflection of your grasp of standards and regulations as well as your ability to apply them; finding opportunities and ways to demonstrate your skills tests your social abilities, while the quality of your performance depends on the amount of theoretical knowledge you possess. You can learn a lot of very useful things on the spot, such as the practical application of theoretical knowledge!
1. First, one must learn the relevant standards and specifications. Although things on site can sometimes be flexible, they still need to comply with these standards; otherwise, problems will arise. 2. Good skills in visual representation are necessary – as for why, I won’t go into details. 3. Coordination is key, as projects aren’t completed by just one or two people. Any issues that arise need to be explained properly, as the project owners are busy and have heavy responsibilities. Nowadays, owners generally have high expectations regarding project progress, so it’s important to gain their sympathy and support. 4. As for the importance of theoretical knowledge, I’d like to share some thoughts: although there are many practical problems to deal with on site, it’s not possible to ignore theoretical learning. After gaining some experience on site, one needs a solid theoretical foundation for taking on important roles; otherwise, one will have to start learning from scratch again, which is time-consuming.
