Yesterday, the Guangdong Provincial Environmental Protection Bureau released the results of the environmental credit management assessment for key polluters in Guangdong last year. A total of 164 enterprises were subject to evaluation; 19 of them, including the Guangzhou branch and the refining division of the Maoming branch of Sinopec Corporation, were given a “red card” rating due to serious excess levels of pollutants, illegal discharge of pollutants, direct discharge of pollutants, or the occurrence of major or severe environmental pollution incidents. These enterprises were included in the list of those under strict environmental supervision. 31 companies, including Guangdong Southern Alkali Co., Ltd. and Shenzhen Nanshan Thermal Power Co., Ltd., have been given a \"yellow card warning\". 70% of the companies that participated in the evaluation passed successfully. It is understood that those companies that met all the evaluation criteria were classified as green, environmentally friendly, and honest enterprises. Companies with pollution-related activities but less severe cases were labeled as enterprises under yellow card warning. Those that exceeded the limits significantly or committed illegal discharges more than twice, or experienced major or extremely serious environmental pollution incidents, were classified as enterprises under red card strict control. Following the evaluation, 114 enterprises were awarded a green card for their credit management in terms of key pollution sources for the year 2007, accounting for 70% of the enterprises that participated in the evaluation; 31 enterprises received a yellow card, representing 19% of the participating enterprises; and 19 enterprises got a red card, accounting for 11% of those involved in the evaluation. Yesterday, the Guangdong Provincial Environmental Protection Bureau posted the evaluation results on its website. During the public display period, the bureau accepted issues raised by the public through various means such as phone calls, letters, and in-person visits, and it would investigate, verify, and address these issues.
