Asphalt is often used in experiments. May I ask: should asphalt be cleaned with gasoline, diesel, or something else?
It depends on what you’re washing ! ! Generally, gasoline is better; it has a better dissolving capacity for asphalt, and it is also more volatile, evaporating quickly after cleaning and leaving no residue on the surface being cleaned. Carbon tetrachloride can be used as well, as can benzene solvents
The components of asphalt can be divided into saturated components, aromatic components, resins, and asphaltenes. The presence of aromatic components increases the aromaticity of the dispersing medium in asphalt, thereby contributing to the stability of the colloidal system. Reducing the content of aromatic compounds in asphalt leads to a decrease in its colloidal stability; therefore, solvents with a high aromatic content should be used for cleaning asphalt. Based on the gasoline and diesel provided by the poster, gasoline seems to give better results; however, toluene or mixed xylene would likely yield the best outcomes.

Any organic solvent should work, I think! But it’s best to use petroleum solvents, because asphalt comes from petroleum! :lol
It is recommended to choose diesel. Safety: Gasoline is volatile with a low flash point, making it unsafe. Health: The aromatics in gasoline can easily evaporate into the air, posing a risk to health. Solubility: Diesel molecules are larger than those of gasoline and contain polycyclic aromatics; in terms of molecular weight and structure, they are more similar to asphalt, resulting in better solubility. Petroleum solvents free of aromatics are unable to dissolve the gum-like asphaltenes in asphalt, so they are not effective for cleaning asphalt. Cleaning method: Immerse the utensils to be cleaned in diesel, heat it to an appropriate temperature of 40–60 degrees, and after a few hours, the asphalt will dissolve in or swell within the diesel, making it very easy to clean. To clean it thoroughly, it can be further cleaned with a solvent.
