As the title suggests, support rings and cutting fixtures are to be welded to the inner wall of the tower. Is heat treatment required? If so, how should it be carried out? Column reactors including various types of devices; a categorized answer is requested.
Whether heat treatment is required depends on the requirements of the equipment itself. It is best to weld the shims before heat treatment, and then weld on them after heat treatment.
First, one should understand why heat treatment is necessary
For the renovation of some old towers, it is necessary to remove existing fixing elements such as support rings and replace them with new ones; therefore, welding must be carried out on the tower wall. When the tower wall is made of materials such as chromium-molybdenum steel, the microstructural properties in the heat-affected zone change, which is why I believe post-weld heat treatment is essential. This is my opinion, but I don’t have any knowledge in terms of materials and heat treatment; therefore, I’m seeking advice from everyone here. If there are experts in this field, I would be grateful if you could share your insights. Thank you!
It depends on the welding method used, the control of welding energy, as well as the welding process. The material of the base metal is also crucial. The location where welding takes place is another factor that needs to be considered. However, the issue with support rings inside towers isn’t that serious. Excessive welding energy is a major cause of deterioration in the properties of the heat-affected zone when welding low-carbon steel
The internal components do not require heat treatment. The welding stress generated when these components are welded to the cylinder wall must be eliminated through heat treatment.
First, consider the material of the tower. If it is a cast iron tower, heat treatment is necessary to eliminate stresses; otherwise, the welding quality will not meet the requirements, and cracks are likely to appear at the welded areas. For ordinary carbon steel towers, no heat treatment is required, and there are no major issues
