Inositol promotes the metabolism of fat in the liver and other tissues; in the human body it combines with fatty acids and phospholipids to form inositol phospholipids, which helps reduce cholesterol. It can be used in the treatment of hepatitis, cirrhosis, and atherosclerosis. Inositol can be obtained by hydrolyzing phthalein, and the process mainly includes steam heating (8–12 hours), neutralization (to pH 9–10), collection of the filtrate, decolorization using activated carbon, cooling and crystallization over 4 hours, and purification.
Phytin, also known as calcium magnesium inositol hexaphosphate, is a tonic with therapeutic effects on conditions such as rickets and bone disorders. The impregnation water is neutralized with lime (to adjust the pH to around 5.8), left to stand, the supernatant is removed, filtration under pressure is performed, followed by drying and crushing to obtain a powdered product.
Phytic acid has a wide range of uses, and China has relied on imports for phytic acid. Although research and production in this area have begun in the domestic market, no regular pattern has yet been established, and demand exceeds supply. By passing the purified Phi Town compound through strong acid ion exchange resin, followed by decolorization and low-temperature vacuum evaporation, a product containing over 70% phytic acid can be obtained.
