I have been in the chemical industry for not long, and when studying the plant PID designed by uop for our company, I encountered terms related to pumps. I would appreciate some guidance: What pressures do the four terms suction pressure, discharge pressure, differential pressure, and differential head refer to respectively? (These designs are all in accordance with API610 9th edition.) What is the relationship between them? What is its relationship with NPSH, the net suction head? Suction pressure: The inlet pressure of the pump, but it is not NPSHa. Discharge pressure: The outlet pressure of the pump; this is a requirement that pumps must meet. Differential pressure: the pressure difference, which is equal to outlet pressure minus inlet pressure. Differential head: a measure of pressure, typically expressed in meters of water column; it represents the pressure difference between the inlet and outlet.
Actually, this is too easy; a direct translation will suffice: suction pressure refers to the pressure at the inlet, discharge pressure refers to the pressure at the outlet, differential pressure is the difference in pressure between the inlet and outlet. NPSHa is the available net positive suction head available in the system, and it depends on the system’s configuration. NPSHr is the required net positive suction head for the pump, and it is related to the pump’s own structure. For centrifugal pumps, the difference between NPSHa and NPSHr should be greater than 0.5 M; for positive-displacement pumps such as gear pumps, a value of greater than or equal to that amount is sufficient
