Recently, the 1,000-hour pilot operation of the new technology for producing high-quality gasoline from syngas via methanol/dimethyl ether, which I developed in collaboration with Henan Yongcheng Coal and Electricity Group Company, was completed. The new technology for producing high-quality gasoline from syngas via methanol/dimethyl ether is one of the technical approaches for manufacturing petrochemical products through non-petroleum routes. Carbon-based resources from non-petroleum sources such as coal and natural gas are first converted into syngas, which is then used in a first-stage reaction to produce a mixture of methanol and dimethyl ether. This mixture, along with the unconverted syngas, enters a second-stage reactor, where, under the action of molecular sieve catalysts, methanol and dimethyl ether are further converted to yield high-quality gasoline products. These high-quality gasoline products are obtained through cooling and separation, while the unconverted syngas and other by-products from the second-stage reaction are recycled back to the first stage to ensure complete conversion. The matching of reaction process conditions for the two stages and the selectivity of the catalyst are the two key issues in this technology. 1,000 hours of continuous pilot operation have preliminarily verified the breakthroughs achieved by the new technology in these two key areas, laying the foundation for further industrial-scale tests. . Yunnan Jihua Group is also conducting experiments with MTG technology. It is also the Shanxi Institute of Coal Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences. How does the Coalification Research Institute conduct experiments everywhere? Is this technology already mature in China? What are the prospects? What is the proportion of methanol used to produce gasoline? Is 2 tons of methanol enough to produce 1 ton of gasoline? This reminds me of the discussions I had with Professors Tan Yisheng and Han Yizhuo at the Shanxi Coal Chemistry Institute in May 2003, while researching the dimethyl ether market and related technologies. During that research effort, Professor Tan Yisheng and Professor Han Yizhuo from the Coal Conversion **Research Laboratory at the Shanxi Coal Chemistry Institute explained that, both domestically and internationally, the development of one-step processes using coal-based syngas to produce dimethyl ether is still in the pilot and bench-scale research phase, and industrial-scale production has not yet been achieved. Over the past decade or so, the project team members have gained substantial experience and expertise in the synthesis of dimethyl ether, catalyst preparation, and reaction engineering. A uniquely developed bifunctional catalyst suitable for slurry-bed reactors, capable of performing methanol synthesis, dehydration, and shift reactions, features high activity and selectivity. The key technology for producing dimethyl ether in a single step starting from coal has been largely mastered, and process trials have been completed; however, large-scale production will still take some time. The two-step method for methanol dehydration is currently the widely used process technology both domestically and internationally. At that time, they were working with a certain company on an industrial trial for 100 tons of dimethyl ether, but it was halted because the fertilizer factory involved in the partnership went bankrupt for operational reasons. Therefore, the pilot test on the slurry-bed coal-based conversion to dimethyl ether at this institute is on hold. Currently, I am working on the 863 pre-research project funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology, titled “Research and Development of the Slurry Bed Process for Dimethyl Ether Synthesis”. Currently, I have started working in the field of coal chemical engineering again. Once I have the opportunity after the New Year, I will definitely visit Professor Tan Yisheng, Professor Han Yizhuo, and Professor Tang Hong at the Shanxi Coal Chemical Research Institute and the Southwest Chemical Engineering Research Institute. Dizzy! Our methanol-to-gasoline system was put into operation in October 2007; the fuel has been produced and patents have been filed. So what’s the point of that? . . :L
