One source states that the largest facility under construction in the world is the 2.48 million tons per year methanol plant built in Nigeria by EuroChen in Singapore, using Topsoe’s technology. I wonder how the construction of this facility is progressing Where are the other relatively large methanol plants in the world, what technologies from which companies are they using, and what are their scale and years of operation?
Is the capacity of 2.48 million tons per year for a methanol plant the capacity of one plant, or the sum of the capacities of multiple plants?

Currently, the capacity of a single production unit worldwide is generally over 600,000 tons, and in the past five years, newly built units have mostly had a capacity of around 1 million tons. The capacity of methanol plants in countries such as Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar is around 1 million tons each; for example, Methanex’s methanol plant in Chile has a capacity of 975,000 tons per year. 2. Titan Methanol’s 1.7 million-ton facility in Trinidad and Tobago is the largest methanol plant in the world ； And the plant with a capacity of 2.48 million tons is now also in the process of design and construction. 3. The 2.48 million t/a methanol plant is part of a natural gas-to-petrochemicals complex that Singapore-based Eurochem Technologies plans to build in Nigeria. The combined facility includes a natural gas-to-methanol production unit with a capacity of 2480 kt/year; the methanol produced is to be used as feed for a Methanol-to-Olefins (MTO) unit, which is designed to produce 400 kt/year of ethylene and 400 kt/year of propylene. The ethylene and propylene produced are then used to manufacture 400 kt/year of high-density polyethylene and 400 kt/year of polypropylene. As planned, the project is set to go into operation in 2012.
After reading the additional information from above, I was quite surprised; it’s the first time I’ve heard of a methanol plant of such scale. Is there any detailed information about this plant? Finally, could there be some details on the processes and equipment used?
Globally, there are two plants in operation with a maximum capacity of 1.6 million tons per year each, and both are located abroad. The Shenhua Baotou project under construction in China, with a maximum capacity of 1.8 million tons per year per unit!
