The crude oil processed by our atmospheric and vacuum distillation units has a very mixed composition; some of this crude oil is obtained from private sources and may contain components such as coker wax oil, slurry oil, and residue. This cannot be detected through crude oil analysis, but it poses significant challenges in the operation of subsequent units. It is clear that some processed oil has been mixed into the crude oil, but we need to know how to determine whether other types of oil have been added to it so that we can report this to our superiors.
Doing a distillation test at the actual boiling point might be helpful.
If secondary processed oil is mixed in, which contains unsaturated hydrocarbon components, a group composition analysis can be performed to determine this, as unsaturated hydrocarbons are virtually absent in crude oil, aside from small amounts of aromatic hydrocarbons.
