The “XF-type adsorption and purification device for organic chemical exhaust gases” developed by the Zibo branch of Shandong Environmental Consulting Co., Ltd. has recently passed the technical evaluation conducted by experts organized by the Shandong Provincial Environmental Protection Bureau. Experts in technical evaluation said that the company has set a good example in Shandong Province by developing environmental protection technologies for treating organic chemical emissions; this system represents advanced domestic technology and holds great potential for widespread application. It is understood that the Zibo branch of Shandong Environmental Consulting Co., Ltd. began carrying out scientific and technical research in the second half of last year, using activated carbon fibers to absorb organic substances from chemical industry waste gases, thereby achieving the goal of recovering organic solvents and purifying the air. This system achieves a recovery rate of over 98% for organic compounds in chemical process exhaust gases. The activated carbon fiber material after adsorption is collected in a dedicated location, where it is washed and recovered through treatment processes before being reused.

There are many different types of chemical plant exhaust gases. Also, are there any demonstration projects? If there are any, I hope the original poster can introduce them, so that we can have more technical solutions when working on chemical engineering projects.
I work in chemical separation, but I’ve never really been interested in adsorption involving unsteady-state processes (my fault). It’s mainly because the mathematical model is too complex. So I missed the opportunity to work in adsorption while I was in graduate school (in the 1980s, only South China and my university had master’s programs in adsorption; my supervisor asked me to choose between adsorption and distillation). Furthermore, the adsorption process is complex, requiring at least two towers to be used alternately. So I think the promotion of adsorption nowadays is partly attributed to the development of automatic control. If the activated carbon fiber material after adsorption still needs to be collected in a specialized location (for steaming, washing, recycling, and reuse), it only reinforced my preconceptions. That’s so troublesome! Furthermore, the amount of adsorption is inherently limited; large amounts of adsorbent are required when dealing with large volumes or high concentrations. With such high transportation costs, and since users gain no benefits from recycling organic waste (they might even have to pay disposal fees), why would companies be willing to do it? Therefore, I believe that due to these limitations, this technology or operation mode will not have an advantage in long-term competition with other processes such as freeze condensation, solvent absorption, membrane permeation, and even oxidation/incineration.
