Discussion: Is insulation needed for pipelines carrying concentrated (98%~93%) sulfuric acid in winter?
It is necessary, and heat tracing is also required; otherwise it will solidify easily
We don’t have that here; the lowest temperature in winter is around minus ten degrees. In winter, 98 isn’t necessary – 92 or 3 will do just fine.
The percentage of concentrated H2SO4 varies depending on the local environmental temperature: 84, 85, 86, 87, 88, 89, 90, 91, 92; freezing point in °C: +8.3, +7.9, +6.6, +4.0, +0.5, -4.2, -10.2, -17.3, -25.6. For percentages of concentrated H2SO4 at 93, 93.3, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98, 99, 100, the freezing point is: -35.0, -37.8, -30.8, -21.8, -13.6, -6.3, +0.1, -5.7, +10.45
Thank you to Floor 6 for providing the sulfuric acid freezing point parameters. We are in the north, and experience shows that 98% concentrated sulfuric acid requires insulation and heat tracing, while 93% sulfuric acid does not need such measures. 98% sulfuric acid freezes easily in winter.
Does the container holding 98% need to be heated? Is a regular horizontal tank sufficient?
