Basic qualities of designers

Many young engineers or those who have just started working in design often ask, “What skills or qualities does a designer need to be competent?” ”So, based on my work experience over the past few years, I would like to discuss what qualities are necessary (from a personal perspective). First is professional skills, which encompass a wide range of knowledge; for example, if you work in chemical process design, you should first master material balance, heat balance, and calculations related to process equipment. Additionally, it’s important to be familiar with various chemical design standards, including building code requirements for fire safety and many other regulations – most of which can be found on this forum. One should also be proficient in various software related to their work, including Aspen and ProⅡ for calculations, CAD and PDS for drawing, as well as an understanding of control systems. These are detailed in the \"Specifications for Process System Engineering Design,\" and it is recommended that beginners read this book. II. Industry knowledge: This refers primarily to the industry sectors involved in the projects carried out by designers. If you are working on projects related to ethylene or alcohol, then you should have a comprehensive understanding of the industry in question, including the most advanced production processes, current development status, and market prospects. Third, personal qualities: as an excellent designer, one must first have an interest in design work. Design tasks can often seem rather dull, so it is only by loving design that it becomes easier to do good work in this field. Therefore, in addition to possessing the aforementioned professional skills and industry knowledge, designers should have some basic personal qualities, namely the following “five hearts”. 1. Concentration: This mainly refers to the need for designers to be focused while carrying out design tasks, and not to be distracted. Experience shows that maintaining a high level of focus not only improves efficiency but also helps to identify more flaws in the work. Those team members who are most focused in their tasks tend to achieve the best results. 2. Carefulness: This mainly refers to the need to be careful when carrying out design work, to execute it diligently without overlooking any details. Certain defects are difficult to detect if not carefully examined, such as certain graphic styles and text. 3. Patience: Many design tasks can be quite tedious at times, and a great deal of patience is required to complete them well. If you are impetuous, you won’t be able to be \"focused\" and \"meticulous,\" which will allow many work defects to slip past you. 4. Responsibility: Responsibility is one of the essential qualities for doing work well, and engineers should especially strive to uphold it. If responsibility is not fulfilled in the design, or if it is handled carelessly, it is very likely to lead to severe consequences. 5. Confidence: Confidence is a quality that most design engineers lack these days. To achieve better career progress, engineers should strive to develop it and build the confidence to “solve all design problems.”

I believe there must be \"three types of strength\": intelligence, physical strength, and perseverance. Intelligence goes without saying, and so does physical strength; for a large-scale project with a long design cycle, it is very difficult to carry out the design work well without strong perseverance.
