Our factory uses a 10-3-7 pressure swing adsorption process, but the adsorbers have insulation layers in their design, whereas our factory has not installed any insulation. Please discuss whether insulation is needed for the adsorber in this process. Please share your opinions.

There is essentially no temperature change throughout the adsorption process; whether insulation is necessary can be determined based on the operating conditions.

There are several situations regarding whether insulation is used or not: 1. Frost protection in winter: In the northern regions where temperatures are low, the raw gas contains a high amount of water, which can lead to water remaining and freezing. 2. Low temperature results in poor desorption performance ; 3. Adsorption and desorption temperatures higher than the ambient temperature are required ; 4. Valves are prone to damage to their sealing surfaces at low temperatures (related to the material used). 5. The adsorbent has a high capacity for adsorption, which generates a lot of adsorption heat; the unadsorbed gas carries away this heat, resulting in significant cooling during desorption. 6. Generally, such devices need to be insulated in the north. Theoretically, since thermal insulation rings have been designed, appropriate insulation should be provided during installation; in my opinion, there is no need to cut costs on such construction materials. This is because the design takes into account both the process requirements and the local climate conditions; unless some manufacturers are careless in their design process and simply provide you with the drawings of devices of the same scale without considering the differences in climate conditions.

Recently, I went to a facility in Shandong to take a look, and there were indeed things that resembled insulation rings. However, I don’t think they were used for insulation; rather, they seemed to serve as reinforcement rings to prevent the equipment from being flattened. I asked the equipment auditors about this issue, and they felt that such fillet welds merit discussion, as it is better not to do it in that way.
