The syngas is first preheated and passed through a sulfur protection reactor, which is used to remove any remaining trace amounts of sulfur from the feed gas. The sulfur component can poison the downstream methanation catalyst, so it must be removed to very low levels. After desulfurization, the raw gas is heated and mixed with the recycle gas coming from the first methanation reactor; after mixing, it passes through the first methanation reactor. In the methanation reaction, CO and CO2 react with H2 to form CH4, as shown in the following reactions: CO + 3 H2 = CH4 + H2O; CO2 + 4 H2 = CH4 + 2 H2O. These two reactions are highly exothermic. The outlet gas from the methanation reactor is cooled by the high-pressure superheated steam produced. To control the temperature rise in the first reactor, a portion of the cooled gas is recycled into the reaction. Before mixing with the feed gas, the recycle gas is further cooled by preheating it with boiler feedwater, and then compressed in a hot gas recirculation compressor. The methanation reaction uses a proprietary Topsoe nickel-based catalyst, model MCR-2R. This catalyst is characterized by maintaining high activity over a wide temperature range, which allows the circulation gas volume to be as low as possible, thereby resulting in a smaller size for the circulation compressor. Part of the partially methanated syngas passes through as many as three methanation reactors in sequence, to achieve almost complete conversion of CO into CH4. The product gas is primarily composed of CH4, with trace amounts of H2 and CO2, and possibly inert gases such as N2 and Ar. It is then cooled to ambient temperature and dried to meet the specifications required for natural gas pipelines. The vast majority of the reaction heat in the methanation reaction is recovered by generating high-pressure superheated steam through some heat exchangers, which can then be used as energy in steam turbines.

The key issue now is the treatment of residual liquid waste. The original plan for the Great Plain was to use incineration, but that method has never been put into use; it seems there are problems again lately – entry is not allowed. The bidding process for gasification units must have already ended.
