Properties, applications, and current status of SEBS: SEBS is a new type of thermoplastic elastomer rubber whose properties remain unchanged at high temperatures of 150°C or low temperatures of –60°C. SEBS also boasts excellent aging resistance, plasticity, high elasticity, and the ability to function without vulcanization. SEBS is a versatile synthetic rubber widely used in polymer modification, adhesives and sealing materials, viscosity enhancers for lubricants, fillers and jacketing materials for high-quality cables and wires, and asphalt modification. It can be used to manufacture various soft contact materials such as handles, stationery, toys, handles for sports equipment, and automotive sealing strips; the leftover material from these products can be reused. Predictions by AMI Consultancy in Bristol, UK, indicate that between 2003 and 2008, SEBS will gradually replace the existing thermoplastic elastomer SBS, with demand for SEBS in European countries expected to grow at a rate of 6.5% per year. Zhou Wenrong, deputy secretary-general of the China Synthetic Rubber Industry Association, believes that China’s demand for SEBS will grow at an even faster pace. At the beginning of this year, the price of natural rubber in China exceeded the record high of 20,000 yuan per ton, which is related to a severe shortage of natural rubber in the country; it is also partly due to a low supply of synthetic rubber. Globally, the annual production capacity of SEBS is around 150,000 tons. For many years, the use of SEBS products in China has relied entirely on imports, which are expensive; industrial production of this material remains non-existent in China. The Yueyang Petrochemical Rubber Factory possesses China’s first industrial production facility with independent intellectual property rights, capable of producing 10,000 tons of SEBS (hydrogenated SBS) per year. Since it was commissioned in March of this year, the facility has been operating smoothly, with stable product quality; the daily output of qualified SEBS remains above 30 tons. This set of equipment is part of the first phase of the project titled \"Development of 20,000 tons/year SEBS production technology suite and its industrial application\", which is listed as a key scientific and technological research project under the 863 Program and Sinopec’s \"Ten Dragon\" initiative. Its completion, commissioning, and stable operation mark significant progress in the development of China Petrochemical’s core technologies for enhancing the performance of synthetic rubbers as well as specialized process technologies; Balin Petrochemical was the first in the country to achieve industrial-scale production of SEBS. This setup can also produce SBS, making it versatile. 2. Sealing strips The development of sealing strips has gone through PVC → vulcanized styrene-butadiene → dynamically vulcanized EPDM/PP modified materials → SEBS/PP modified materials. Compared with the widely used EPDM/PP today, SEBS/PP materials offer significant advantages in terms of price, performance, processability, and recyclability, while also meeting today’s environmental requirements. At present, developed countries such as the United States use SEBS/PP for seals in large quantities, while in China, the annual consumption of SEBS for seals is only 1,000 tons. To accelerate the use of SEBS in the seal strip industry, Baling Petrochemical has developed SEBS grades specifically for seal strips. The potential consumption of SEBS in the seal strip industry is estimated to be 5,000 tons. 3. Auto parts SEBS is used in automotive components and has been widely applied abroad. The use of SEBS in this field is still in its infancy in China; companies such as Guangzhou Lianzhi and German company Gobao are actively promoting the use of SEBS in automotive components. With the development of China’s automotive industry, the consumption of SEBS is expected to reach 4,000 tons in the next two years. 4. Toys SEBS possesses a unique network structure, which allows for the production of various elastomeric materials with Shore hardness values ranging from Shore A0 to Shore D50 ; Due to the non-toxicity and excellent surface properties of SEBS and its blends, SEBS is highly suitable for the production of children’s toys. Currently, the market demand for ultra-soft and ultra-hard SEBS toy materials in China exceeds 800 tons, with a growth rate of 30% per year. 5. Modified engineering plastic SEBS can be used to modify engineering plastics such as PP, PE, PC, and PA. The use of European and American SEBS for toughening PC and PA is quite substantial, and its usage in China is also increasing rapidly in this regard. 6. Others SEBS is a raw material for medical materials that is non-toxic and does not cause allergic reactions in the human body; it has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). However, due to the low price of latex and insufficient awareness of SEBS products in the market, the use of SEBS in medical devices and food packaging in China is still in its initial stages. With the strengthening of regulation in this area in our country, particularly through strict legislation on food packaging films, consumption of SEBS in this sector is expected to increase to some extent. SEBS can also be used for thickening lubricants, in the production of coatings, inks, and interpenetrating network materials, as well as in the creation of conductive materials and nanomaterials. Research on the use of SEBS in coatings and inks has already begun in China. It is reported that in the field of SEBS interpenetrating network (IPN) materials, the main research direction is the use of SEBS in combination with silicone for high-voltage electrical components and medical devices ; IPN materials of SEBS and epoxy resin can be used to manufacture ultra-tough and ultra-strong engineering materials. As people’s living standards improve, the demand for high-end consumer goods increases, leading to rapid growth in SEBS consumption. In 2004, consumption reached 15,000 tons. As SEBS becomes more accepted by users and its prices become more reasonable, it is expected that the market volume of SEBS in China will exceed 20,000 tons within two years. Strengthen scientific research cooperation and improve the product portfolio. Although China has a market for SEBS products, applied research is still in its infancy. Enterprises should cooperate with relevant research institutions to integrate product development, production, applied research, and technical services, so as to develop more products as soon as possible, improve the product portfolio, expand the areas of application for SEBS, enhance the level of technical services provided by enterprises, and thus quickly penetrate new markets. Due to insufficient domestic production capacity, foreign products account for most of the market share. Therefore, domestic enterprises should expand their production scale at the appropriate time, on the basis of continuously improving product quality, in order to increase their market share.
