Our DCS has been in use for nearly 4 years; now the manufacturer has introduced a newer version of DCS and recommended that we upgrade. Our old version of DCS has been working well so far, so I'm a little confused. Should I upgrade it? If you decide to upgrade, what preparations should you make? If you use it well, it’s okay not to upgrade it temporarily. Ask the manufacturer. If it is to repair a DCS system software defect, the manufacturer should be responsible for upgrading it free of charge. If a hardware upgrade leads to a software upgrade, the software can be upgraded at the same time as long as the spare parts are used up or the hardware needs to be replaced. Software upgrades need to be carried out offline, requiring backup and informing process production to arrange shutdown time.

The two people above made a good point. The DCS contract stipulates that spare parts must be guaranteed for 10 years. If the capacity is not expanded, the hardware will basically not need to be upgraded. The upgrade of the software version should be stipulated in the contract, mainly free of charge. The manufacturer recommends that you upgrade, just to make money from you again. For example, many companies using Yokogawa are still using CS1000. Yokogawa has always recommended that they use CS3000, but there are no problems with their systems. Why upgrade? As long as spare parts are guaranteed, there is no need to worry.
What the people above said make sense. The DCS in the unit is HS2000-1.5. It is difficult to guarantee the hardware now. :'(
A set of DCS can be used in industry for 10 years or more. The reason why DCS is used well is that its hardware and software are quite reliable. As a control system, DCS requires professionals to perform daily maintenance, inspection, and repairs on it. A 4-year-old DCS should not be phased out or upgraded unless there are major hidden dangers in the system itself or your company has no place to invest.
As everyone above said, the key point is the supply of hardware spare parts. If there are still hardware spare parts available, there is really no need to upgrade unless it is for energy saving considerations and new equipment needs to be added, and the new equipment cannot be used in the original system.
