Ammonium and hydrogen chloride are used to produce ammonium chloride, which crystallizes upon contact with water. Does anyone know the detailed reaction conditions, such as temperature? It seems like something simple, but I don’t know very much about it in detail.
Ammonium chloride is produced as a by-product in the caustic soda industry and can be used as fertilizer. Its production principle is as follows: In a salting-out crystallizer (at atmospheric pressure), a solution with a specific concentration – a multi-component system containing fixed ammonia, free ammonia, chloride ions, sodium ions, bicarbonate ions, carbonate ions, and liquid carbon dioxide – to which table salt NaCl is added. Thanks to the common-ion effect, at a temperature of 10–15°C, NaCl dissolves while ammonium chloride precipitates. The precipitated ammonium chloride is then separated by centrifugation, thereby yielding the finished product in the form of ammonium chloride. The production of ammonium chloride from ammonia and hydrogen chloride alone, with crystallization upon contact with water, is not very well understood as a production method.
