Distillation is suitable for separating water and alcohol when the water content is high. Molecular sieves are suitable for separation processes where alcohol and water form an azeotrope after distillation, and the water content of the alcohol product is required to be at hundreds or dozens of PPM. Membrane separation can be used in both cases (the product can reach 99.5%), but the scale of use and investment costs are unknown.
Another method is to use ion exchange resin. Macroporous anion and cation exchange adsorption resin can absorb trace amounts of moisture. We have done this before, and it has certain results.
The main processes are still distillation (including extractive distillation) and molecular sieve dehydration. If the water content is high, it can be rectified and dehydrated on the molecular sieve first, and the water content can reach about 10ppm. If the water content is already low (below 3000ppm), it can be dehydrated directly with the molecular sieve to reach 10ppm. The molecular sieve can be made into a fixed bed type. There are also other cases of removing high-content water, such as: Nowadays, membrane separation removes water and ion exchange resin, but the water content cannot meet the lower requirements. Membrane separation removes water from alcohol and has been successfully used in industrial production.
