Why does an inverter need to be used at a reduced capacity when operating at high altitudes? And does the derating change for every 1000m increase?
Altitude has an impact on frequency converters, primarily affecting their cooling and capacitor performance. The decrease in air density leads to insufficient cooling capacity, which in turn affects the cooling effect; as altitude increases, the cooling efficiency declines. Starting from 1000 meters, for every additional 100 meters, the allowable temperature rise decreases by 1%. At the same time, the altitude at which the inverter is installed is required to be below 1000 meters; as the altitude increases, atmospheric pressure decreases, which can lead to insulation failures. At an altitude of 1500 meters, the voltage tolerance should be reduced by about 5% ； At an altitude of 3,000 meters, the pressure resistance decreases by about 20%. At the same time, the rated current value decreases at altitudes above 1000 meters; it drops to 99% at 1500 meters and to 96% at 3000 meters. Therefore, inverters need to be used at reduced capacity in high-altitude areas; the derating factor is usually provided in the inverter manual.
