The types of C900 SCBA are determined by the following factors: – Type of compressed air cylinder (aluminum alloy, steel, Kevlar wound, carbon fiber fully wound, with capacities of 4 or 10 liters) – Coil and shape of the cylinder valve (NF, DIN, US) – Type and grade of the mask (EN 136–EN 136–10) – Quick-connect interface for the air supply valve. The main types of SCBA are: – Single-cylinder type, with DIN cylinder valve and COSMO mask – Double-cylinder type, with DIN cylinder valve and COSMO mask. 1.3 Functions The SCBA is equipped with one or two cylinders to provide the user with sufficient breathable air. Air is stored in the cylinder under high pressure (up to 300 bar). In the first step, the pressure inside the gas cylinder can be reduced to a medium pressure of 7.5 bar using a pressure regulator. Then air is fed into the air supply valve, and finally positive-pressure air is generated to enter the mask for breathing. Thanks to the air supply valve, a positive pressure is maintained inside the mask regardless of the user’s breathing rate. This prevents outside air or impurities from entering the mask. 1.4 Back panel and straps: The back panel of the C900 is designed based on human anatomy to provide proper weight distribution and comfort. Fits any back shape. It has handles and mounting holes, making it convenient for storage and carrying. Cylinder straps are suitable for any type of cylinder. Adjustable straps (including back straps and shoulder straps) fit any user. The right shoulder strap has a hole for connecting a hose. The hose can deliver air to the pressure gauge and the air supply valve. The bracket and straps are fire-resistant. 1.5 Alarm whistle: This device alerts the user that it is time to start using his reserve air. - Device pressure: 55±5 bar – Sound level: 90 bdA at a distance of one meter – Frequency: 3800 Hz – Air consumption: approximately 5 liters per minute. For safety reasons, the alarm cannot be turned off. 1.6 Pressure regulator: Regardless of how the air pressure inside the cylinder or the user’s breathing rate changes, the pressure regulator ensures a stable medium pressure is provided. In the case of a single-cylinder respirator, the pressure relief valve is fixed to the side of the cylinder on the bracket ; The pressure relief valve of a two-cylinder respirator is installed between the two cylinders. Reduced-pressure rolling is suitable for any type of gas cylinder (EN, DIN, US, BS…). To meet special needs, this pressure relief valve can also be connected to an automatic switch (used in aviation) or a hose for a second user. Connectable to the pressure reducing valve: – One or two gas cylinders – Medium-pressure hoses for delivering air to the supply valve – High-pressure hoses compatible with pressure gauges. Specifications of the pressure reducing valve: – Medium pressure: 7.5±0.5 bar – Operating pressure: up to 300 bar – Operating temperature: -30°C to +60°C (according to EN 137) – The safety valve opens automatically if the medium-pressure output exceeds 11±2 bar (i.e., when the pressure reducing valve fails). 1 Rotating interface 7 Seal cover 2 Pressure gauge 8 Medium-pressure pipe 3 Handle 9 Alarm whistle 4 High-pressure pipe 10 Handwheel 5 Second user interface 11 Cylinder valve/reducing valve interface The seal cover ensures that the reducing valve is installed in the correct position. Only trained personnel authorized by Bagu Company may operate the pressure relief valve. 1.7 Pressure gauge: The pressure gauge shows the air pressure in the cylinder that supplies air to the pressure reducing valve. It enables the user to know how much time they can still work in a hazardous environment, so as to take timely action (see 1.10.2). To ensure clear visibility in any environment, the pressure gauge display is fluorescent. The pressure relief valve is equipped with an air flow limiter (25 liters per minute) to prevent shaking in the event of a hose break. - The pressure gauge ranges from 0 to 400 bar – Class 1.6, 1.8. The supply valve: Medium-pressure air is delivered to the supply valve via a hose connected to a pressure reducing valve. The air supply valve ensures that low-pressure air is supplied to the mask. It has a small mass and volume, and is made of a fire-resistant and highly impact-resistant plastic material. It is connected to the mask via a quick connector. The air supply valve operates in accordance with the user’s air supply requirements, meeting the user’s physiological needs. Air will be supplied continuously into the mask as needed through the button system of the air supply valve. To prevent small solid particles or toxic gases from entering the mask, the air supply valve can create a slight positive pressure of up to 3 millibars inside the mask, with an air flow rate of 400 liters per minute. The quick-connect air supply valve can be easily installed on the mask, thereby creating a pressure excess inside the mask. The air supply valve will only disconnect from the mask when both of these buttons are pressed at the same time. The air supply valve includes: – A propulsion system for additional air supply. There are two types of masks that can be used with the C900: PANORAMASQUE and COSMO; both have the options specified in §1.2 (see the instructions for using the masks). The overpressure inside the mask is generated automatically. 1.10 Gas cylinders: Compressed gas cylinders used in conjunction with SCBA can be made of metal or composite materials. See the diagram and description of SCBA. 1.10.1 Volume of breathable air The volume of breathable air can be calculated using the following factors: – Capacity of the gas cylinder – Operating pressure of the gas cylinder. For example, the volume of air in a 6-liter, 300 bar gas cylinder is: (6 × 300) × 0.9 = 1,620 cubic meters. The coefficient of 0.9 takes into account the compressibility of air as well. 1.10.2 Duration: Volume of breathable air (liters) = Usage time × Consumption rate (liters per minute). Generally, the usage time of a respirator depends on the amount of air available and the user’s consumption rate. The consumption rate of users varies depending on their individual physiological conditions, as well as their working environment and intensity. The air consumption of users is divided into low, medium, and high categories based on their breathing rate. The usage time of the gas cylinder depends on the amount of compressed air stored and the user’s physical condition. Users of SCBA must remember the formula above so that they can calculate the usage time of the gas cylinder in practical applications, and use this information to plan and adjust their work. Starting up, 2.1 Preliminary checks, 2.1.1 Passing the strap through the buckle – The system for this is almost the same across different buckles. 2.1.2 Positioning of the gas cylinder: Check to ensure that the cylinder valve is closed. When using a single gas cylinder, position the cylinder on the back rack, fully tighten the handwheel of the pressure regulator, and clip it into the belt loop. When using two gas cylinders, position the two cylinders first before fixing the belt. Note: When using a single gas cylinder, the red separator on the rubber cylinder holder must be placed along the holder ; When using two gas cylinders, this separator must be placed vertically. 2.2 Quick inspection before use 2.2.1 Pressure of compressed air in the cylinder Fully open the cylinder valve. The pressure gauge must display the following pressures: - 200±10 bar (for a 200-bar gas cylinder at 20°C) - 300±10 bar (for a 300-bar gas cylinder at 20°C). In accordance with EN137 standard 2.2.2 on airtightness, open and close the gas cylinder and observe the pressure gauge. The pressure drop must not exceed 20 bar within one minute (according to EN137 standard). 2.2.3 Alarm whistle 1. Remove the air supply valve from the mask. 2. Open the cylinder valve to put the SCBA unit under pressure. 3. Close the gas cylinder valve. 4. To empty the entire system, place your hand on the air outlet of the supply valve to allow some air to escape. 5. Observe the pressure gauge. The alarm horn must sound when the pressure is below 55±5 bar. 2.3 Starting 2.3.1 Adjusting the straps The adjustment of the entire back panel can be done in two steps: 1. Put the entire device on your back. Pulling down the ring washers attached to the shoulder straps can keep the device in place. 2. Tighten the belt so that it fits snugly around the user’s waist. 3. When the entire breathing apparatus is properly fastened to the user’s back, it will remain in this position. 2.3.2 Wearing a mask: Do not use – Negative-pressure masks with positive-pressure SCBAs – Negative-pressure SCBAs with positive-pressure masks (with red front grille). Wear the mask (see the mask usage instructions for details). Check the airtightness of the mask (see the mask user manual for details). The mask must be worn correctly to ensure effective protection. Persons with thick beards shall not use SCBA breathing protection devices. Persons whose facial shape or deep scars prevent ensuring airtight sealing of the mask when worn must not use SCBA respiratory protection devices. Connect the air supply valve to the interface on the mask. It is recommended that someone else check whether it is properly connected after the gas supply valve has been installed. Check whether the two buttons of the quick interface are properly connected to the mask. 2.3.3 Gas cylinders: Fully open the valve of the gas cylinder. Check the compressed air in the cylinder – see §2.2.1. The entire respirator set is now ready for use. 2.4 Usage: During use, regularly check the pressure gauge. The alarm horn starts to sound when the cylinder pressure is below 55±5 bar. The alarm will continue until all the air in the cylinder is completely exhausted (see §1.10.1). At the start of the alarm, personnel should evacuate the dangerous area as quickly as possible. In emergency situations (when someone is injured or having difficulty breathing) or when the wearer needs additional air supply, pressing the additional air supply button on the air supply valve will increase the air flow rate. 2.5 After use – Remove the air supply valve (see §1.8) ; - Remove the face mask (instructions for using the face shield) ; - Close the gas cylinder valve ; - Empty the entire system by pressing the control button of the air supply valve ; - Release the straps ; - Then release the shoulder straps and remove the entire SCBA set. Note: Never throw an SCBA on the ground carelessly. 3. Routine Maintenance 3.1 Gas Cylinders Compressed gas cylinders must be maintained and serviced by qualified personnel. The latter will affix a certification stamp on the gas cylinder after maintenance. Cylinder valves are components that are very prone to damage. Be sure to conduct a visual inspection after each use. The main causes of damage are: - Air leakage in the system – It is necessary to visually inspect the cylinder valve after each use. 3.1.1 Air quality The air produced by air compressors or other equipment used to fill gas cylinders must meet the specifications set out in standard EN132 (Appendix A). This standard provides precise data under standard operating conditions, namely the air quality at normal atmospheric pressure and ambient temperature. Air composition: Mass percentage (%)(dry air), Volume percentage (%)(dry air): Oxygen 23.01 20.93; Nitrogen 75.51 78.10; Argon 1.286 0.9325; Carbon dioxide 0.04 0.03; Hydrogen 0.001 0.01; Neon 0.0012 0.0018; Krypton 0.00007 0.0005; Xenon 0.0003 0.0001. Air humidity is also an important factor that affects the performance of SCBA units. For SCBA, the water content in the cylinder measured at atmospheric pressure must not exceed -50 mg/m3 for cylinders at 200 bar, and -35 mg/m3 for cylinders at 300 bar. Warning: The air inside the cylinder must be breathable air. 3.1.2 Cylinder drying Warning: Do not completely empty the cylinder (maintain pressure at 5 bar). If there is no overpressure in the cylinder, it must be dried before filling. If the gas cylinder is empty, it needs to be dried using an air dryer or a cylinder oven. 3.1.3 Gas cylinder filling: A gas cylinder may be filled only when it fully meets the requirements of §3.1, 3.1.1, and 3.1.2. The following requirements must be met: - Compliance with **standards** in Europe or the country of use – The valves on the gas cylinders must conform to EN144-1 and EN144-2. - The gas cylinder is marked with a verification stamp and date by a designated person, and it must not be used beyond that date. - Do not use any components that could cause accidents or any improper operations (for example: using a damaged valve). - Do not allow the gas cylinder to become damp (for example, with water droplets at the threaded connections). 3.1.4 Transportation, Storage, and Management When gas cylinders are no longer attached to SCBAs, the following rules must be followed during transportation and storage: – During transportation and storage, the cylinder valves must be fitted with valve caps to protect the threads from external contamination or damage, ensuring that the cylinders can be used again. - During transportation, the gas cylinder must be placed vertically with the valve facing upward. - Both hands are required when moving gas cylinders. - The handle of the gas cylinder valve must not get stuck to the gas cylinder, to prevent the valve from opening accidentally during transportation. - During transportation and handling, never strike, roll, or throw the gas cylinder on the ground. 3.2 Cleaning: The straps can be completely removed from the back frame for disinfection and washing. 3.2.1 Decontamination or disinfection: There are clear regulations regarding decontamination or disinfection. Be sure not to damage the SCBA during cleaning. 3.2.2 Cleaning: After each use, the dirty parts of the respirator must be cleaned with warm water and a neutral detergent. When cleaning, it is necessary to comply with the concentration requirements and usage time limits for the cleaning agent (see the cleaning agent’s instruction manual). Then rinse with warm water. Note: The cleaning agent used must be free of corrosive components (for example, organic solvents can damage the rubber or plastic parts of respirators). 3.2.3 Drying After disinfecting, cleaning, and rinsing the respirator, the SCBA must be dried. All components must be dried at temperatures between 15°C and 30°C. Prevent any heat radiation sources (sunlight, stoves, heating devices). Manufacturer’s recommendation: Dry the components by supplying compressed air to the SCBA (reductor, hose…)) to prevent moisture that may be present during cleaning. 3.3 Inspection: Its functionality must be rechecked after each cleaning or component replacement. Check the diaphragm, rubber, and plastic components of the air supply valve for any deformation, cuts, or other signs of damage. All joints must be able to rotate on their pivot axes without any defects. The air supply valve must be placed as required in 1.7. The following tests can be carried out on the Bagu sine curve testing bench: 3.3.1 Low-pressure airtightness test. Refer to the instructions for the Bagu sine curve testing bench. 3.3.2 Static positive pressure testing of the air supply valve: When testing on a test bench, the pressure inside the mask must be kept at a positive level. 3.3.3 Stored SCBAs must be strictly inspected and stored in two categories: – Respirators that have been inspected and are ready for use; – Respirators that have just been taken out of use and cannot be used as backups immediately. Warning: SCBAs must undergo the following procedures before they can be stored: purification or disinfection, cleaning, inspection, repair, and documentation (in accordance with 5 and 5.2 of NFS76-005); see attachments. Ideal storage conditions: keep away from dust, light, high or low temperatures, humidity, chemicals, as well as corrosive and hazardous substances. The SCBA must be stored on shelves, enclosed in boxes to prevent deformation. If possible, store SCBAs in: – a metal box – an ABS box. If you purchase a large quantity of SCBA respirators, it is recommended to assign a dedicated person to be responsible for their maintenance and storage.
