For lightweight diesel tanks, is ultrasound better or radar?
If measuring flow rate, neither of the two is ideal. A radar level gauge is used for measuring liquid levels. Ultrasonic waves are used for flow measurement, as it is difficult to determine the speed of sound in diesel; ultrasonic measurement results in an overestimated flow rate and instability. Ultrasonic sensors can be used to measure tap water, but not for anything else. Even when measuring tap water, the results depend on various factors; without proper calibration, the accuracy is less than 1%. If you need to use such sensors for trade settlements, mass flow meters are the best choice at present, although they are more expensive and offer high precision. There are many options for process measurement; turbines and orifice plates can be used.
