What are the methods for splicing H-shaped steel? For example, when installing columns, if the H-shaped steel is not long enough and needs to be joined using two sections, are there any methods such as docking or other approaches?
Since direct connection is not possible, during construction, one of the ground flange plates on each side is cut off, as well as the middle plate of one of them; the cutting length is half of 200 millimeters, after which they are inserted together for connection. Some also install reinforcement plates at the joints. It is specified in the general construction codes and drawings.
A 65-ton boiler was once installed; it was produced by Sichuan Boiler Factory, and its steel structure was welded together, without the need for high-strength bolts. The thickness of the H-beams used for the columns is over 25 mm; they are joined directly to each other during assembly, but bevels must be created. After welding is complete, add a reinforcing steel plate on each side of the web area. The entire steel column is assembled from three H-sections.
For support structures, if the thickness is sufficient, double V-groove welding on both sides will suffice; however, for columns or main beams, reinforcement plates along with high-strength bolts are necessary
It can also be joined at an angle, at 45 degrees, before welding
