In the ion exchange membrane production process, packing towers or a combination of packing towers and bubble columns are used to dry chlorine gas. Dilute sulfuric acid is sprayed cyclically within the packing towers to facilitate heat exchange. Also using Hastelloy C. According to the corrosion data sheet, as long as the sulfuric acid concentration is properly controlled, it is feasible to use ordinary steel sheets (such as 304). The materials industry is developing rapidly at present, with many new materials emerging in terms of corrosion resistance. These materials are much cheaper than Hastelloy C, and their corrosion resistance is also quite good. There should be significant room for development in this area.
In the end, Hastelloy was still used.
We also use Hastelloy; chloride ions are corrosive to 304
We use SMO254 (00Cr20Ni18Mo6CuN, S31254), a product from Alfa Laval; it has been in use for over a decade. The gaskets made from this material are of good quality, and its price is lower than that of Hastelloy.

Hastelloy is a good choice; we have been using it and it works well. However, it’s best to replace the gaskets every 2–3 years! Take the chance to clean the plates too! This post was last edited by yzhms on 2008-4-7 12:17]
