The main difference between alcohol hydrocarbonation and the diol or dimethyl process is that the hydrocarbonation reaction using CO and CO2 (to produce fusel oils and methane) replaces the methanation reaction, thereby reducing methane production, helping to lower consumption, and yielding a small amount of combustible liquid as a by-product; The downside is that ammonia cooling must be added to completely separate the fusel oils.
