It’s been almost three years since I graduated and started working. I used to be involved in process work for nearly two years, after which I changed jobs to a private company where I have been working in design. I’m not sure whether pursuing a career in design or in manufacturing will be more promising in the future Please help analyze it.

Both design and craftsmanship are promising. The key is to take into account one’s own strengths and the surrounding conditions!

As for the future, I believe that as long as all sectors do well, they have a promising future. In terms of process and design, the process is the foundation of design; only by ensuring a proper process can design be improved. It is far from sufficient for a design engineer to merely create mechanical design drawings based on the process requirements. Generally speaking, a competent process engineer not only possesses skills in process development but is also capable of carrying out design work. In China’s chemical industry, process development and design are integrated; however, some companies currently separate these two tasks. In any case, both craftsmanship and design should be involved in these two types of work, as they complement each other.

In my view, craftsmanship is one-sided, while design is comprehensive; it involves dealing with everything. The process is the key; if it’s designed thoroughly, there’s nothing more to say. So the two are closely related.
The process is mainly about management, while design needs to be comprehensive. Only with a broad knowledge base can one create good, practical designs.
I don’t understand; is it that easy to distinguish between design and craftsmanship? It’s too difficult. Without a foundation in craftsmanship, how can one talk about design? Such design can easily lead people astray, especially in today’s private enterprises, where it’s easy to adopt improper practices. If you want to work in design, it’s better to start by building a solid foundation in craftsmanship and systems-related fields. Without these basics, your designs will be nothing but castles in the air, problematic projects, and you won’t be able to identify where the major flaws lie. Of course, dealing with private enterprises is manageable enough. But that is by no means design; it’s not the same concept as design in a design institute at all – there’s a fundamental difference. Industrial design is not graphic design; there are many constraints, and it’s not that whimsical.

I didn’t expect the person in charge to separate process engineering and design into two distinct areas; in my understanding, the two are inseparable and form one whole. If they really have to be separated, I’m not sure what counts as process engineering and what counts as design. I work in the field of ion-exchange membrane caustic soda production; perhaps our specific areas of work are different, which is why I haven’t conducted an analysis and comparison of the two like you have. Regarding process design, I personally think it holds great promise, as it covers a relatively wide range of areas ; For example, when I work on the process design for ion-exchange membrane caustic soda production, process design is the key element of the entire project. After working in this field for a long time, it becomes possible to expand into other areas as well, such as instrumentation, electrical equipment, and piping systems. There is much that needs to be learned, and of course, it requires a considerable amount of time to gain expertise in these areas. Perhaps what I’m saying and what the original poster is referring to are two different concepts; let’s just exchange ideas with each other. In my opinion, if one sticks too closely to technical aspects, there won’t be much room for development in the future. It would be best to manage to make a successful transition at the right time, or to broaden one’s areas of expertise and perspective ; In short, if you focus on pure technology, it might get quite exhausting in the future:P

Process is the foundation of design, and design is an extension of the process. As long as you put in effort, in any field, there are always those who excel!
Personally, I think the design aspect takes comprehensive considerations into account and is highly technical; the production process focuses more on technical management. Moreover, I don’t like factory environments, so if I had to choose, I would definitely go with design
