Methods and requirements for selecting hydrogenation catalysts
It cannot be generalized; the type of catalyst and its various properties must be determined based on the raw materials being used, the type of reactor, the reaction conditions, and the requirements of the product. :)
1. The functions of catalysts involve selecting different processes based on varying levels of selectivity, such as hydrogenation desulfurization, denitration, demetallization, and hydrogenation saturation. Generally, catalysts do not have a single function; desulfurization is the most important one, but other aspects also need to be taken into consideration. 2. The type of distillate oil to be processed – such as hydrogenation refining of light distillates, hydrogenation treatment of heavy distillates, hydrogenation refining of petroleum waxes and special oils, or hydrogenation treatment of residue – depends mainly on the type of raw material used. If the raw materials are mixed, a catalyst with a wide range of applicability should be selected. 3. The physicochemical properties of the catalyst itself include, primarily: the content of various active components, crushing strength, bulk density, specific surface area, and pore volume. Catalyst manufacturers will provide you with detailed information on these aspects. Hydrogenation catalyst production in China is quite advanced at present, and the quality is generally satisfactory; it is best to choose products from large manufacturers. It should be noted that the impurity content in catalysts is also quite important; a well-known catalyst once had issues with excessive impurity levels. For example, hydrogenation catalysts generally contain Mo and Ni, and it is possible that impurity metals associated with these elements are present in the catalyst, sometimes in amounts that exceed the allowed limits. 4. The process route to be adopted, as well as the operating conditions such as temperature, pressure, and liquid space velocity; in addition, the conditions for catalyst sulfidation, including whether pre-sulfidation has been carried out.
