There are four parameters in the literature used to measure residence time, as follows: Hydraulic retention time: equal to the volume of the aeration tank divided by the inflow flow rate plus the return flow rate. Microbial retention time: equal to the total amount of activated sludge divided by the sludge discharge rate. Another type of retention time: equal to the total amount of activated sludge divided by the amount of returned sludge. Sludge age: equal to the total amount of sludge divided by the net increase in sludge amount (self-proliferation minus self-oxidation). What are the differences between these parameters? What is measured separately, and what are the relationships or empirical formulas?
The average residence time of microorganisms, also known as the sludge age, refers to the time required for all the microorganisms in a reaction system to be renewed once. In engineering terms, it is the ratio of the total amount of microorganisms in the reaction system to the amount of microorganisms that are removed daily.
