The treatment of wastewater from coal chemical industries is complex, primarily due to the complexity of its components and their high concentrations. The presence of ammonia, phenols, polyphenols, and other long-chain polycyclic substances in the water often inhibits biological activity during biochemical treatment processes or makes these substances difficult to biodegrade. To address pollution issues, one approach is to utilize biochemical methods and improve the adaptability and efficiency of such processes; however, relying solely on this approach yields limited improvements at present. The most important solution is to adopt gasification processes that result in low pollutant emissions, or to enhance the efficiency of pre-treatment processes prior to biochemical treatment. There is still much work to be done in terms of environmental protection in the coal chemical industry. When choosing environmental protection technologies, it is essential to be extremely cautious, so as not to leave future generations with severe environmental pollution as a consequence of the current boom in coal chemical production.
The pollution associated with coal chemical industry can be mainly summarized into two aspects: wastewater pollution and exhaust gas pollution. Many schools and enterprises are conducting research on exhaust gas pollution, but as for wastewater pollution, there aren’t many research reports on this topic. China University of Mining and Technology in Beijing is working on research related to the treatment of wastewater generated from underground coal gasification, though progress seems to be slow.
In fact, much work has already been done in the area of research on coking wastewater. After pretreatment to reduce the pollution load of gasification wastewater, the treatment processes for such wastewater can draw on those used for coking water.
