You can install a quick-connect fire fitting at the water injection valve, and also prepare two rolls of fire hoses (as a set) to use in conjunction with the fire hydrant; this is exactly what we do for our 5 liquefied gas tanks with a capacity of 1000 cubic meters each. :handshake
That won’t work; there isn’t enough pressure. When in use, liquefied gas has to be mixed into the fire-fighting water, and that would cause a lot of problems.
The view from the third floor is still more correct. The purpose of installing water injection pipelines in liquefied gas tanks or other storage tanks is to allow for the injection of water in case there is a leak in the liquid phase inside the tank (especially at the bottom of the tank). This helps to reduce the amount of flammable material that leaks out, thereby decreasing the risk of fires and explosions. Additionally, after water is injected, it is the water that will leak from the site of the leak, which facilitates repair workers in sealing the leak in the tank. Therefore, a dedicated water injection pump and pipelines should be provided for water injection, rather than integrating them with the fire protection system.
Question for the person on floor 4: How should the water injection volume and time be determined? Since the water injection pump is not used continuously, is it necessary to use a pump for this purpose?
There should be no pumps used; Section 6.3.16 of the fire code only mentions this briefly.
For the two sphere tank areas we upgraded, the pressure in the spheres varied due to the different media stored therein; therefore, two pumps were used in the water injection system, each with different flow rates and pressures. Later, during the owner’s inspection, it was suggested that the pressures of these two pumps should be set to match that of the high-pressure pump in order to meet the requirements for redundancy. As a result, we considered installing pressure regulators in the pipelines leading to the low-pressure spheres. The pumps also became redundant for one another. Although there are no regulations requiring this, it is better to have redundancy, but it’s not essential either!
