Xu Beihong, Qu Yuan’s Nine Songs, The Mountain Ghost
If there is someone by the foot of the mountain, clad in ivy and adorned with creeping vines. It’s both charming to look at and amusing; you admire me for my grace and beauty. Riding a red leopard with a spotted cat by my side; an osmanthus-colored chariot adorned with cinnamon flags. Brought by Shilan, along with Du Heng; its fragrant scent is left for those I miss. Elsewhere, the dense bamboo prevents sight of the sky; the path is treacherous, and I arrive alone. The table stands alone on top of the mountain, with clouds floating below it. Dark and gloomy is the day, the east wind blows bringing divine rain. I stay for meditation, forgetting to return; as the years pass, who will beautify me? Picking the three beautiful flowers in the mountains, where rocks are piled up and kudzu vines spread everywhere. I lament over my beloved, lost in longing to return; you think of me yet have no time. The man in the mountains wears fragrant daisies; he drinks from spring water beneath pine and cypress trees. When you think of me, you doubt whether it’s really true. Thunder rumbles and rain falls heavily; monkeys chatter and howl in the night. The wind blows strongly and the trees rustle; thinking of my beloved, I am filled with sorrow.
