Our company is building a 1,4-butanediol plant; could you please provide some information on the components used to produce acetylene from calcium carbide? Thank you!
Pure acetylene is a colorless and odorless gas, whereas acetylene produced from calcium carbide contains impurities such as phosphine, arsenic hydride, and hydrogen sulfide, giving it a distinctive pungent garlic-like smell and toxicity；
Acetylene ≥99.8% vol, H2S+COS ≤1000ppm, Phosphine ≤600ppm
Acetylene ≥98%, phosphine ≤0.06%, hydrogen sulfide ≤0.1% – all as volume %.
The processes for producing acetylene from calcium carbide vary slightly; the components of the acetylene produced by the wet method, as far as I know, are as follows: C2H2: >=99%, N2: ~1%, O2: ~0.1%. All other components can be removed through purification. Which gentleman knows the gas components of acetylene produced by the dry method? I am particularly interested in this, so thank you in advance.

For acetylene produced by the calcium carbide-acetylene method, the quality of the calcium carbide used is crucial; during purification, phosphorus, sulfur, and arsenic must be removed, as otherwise they can poison the catalysts used in BYD synthesis.
