On August 12, the Berlin-based startup Nestpick released the index. Singapore topped the latest list of the best cities for entrepreneurship. The other top five cities are Helsinki, San Francisco, Berlin, and Stockholm. The only Asian city to make it into the top ten is Seoul. Shanghai, **, Beijing, and Tokyo rank lower. Several other Southeast Asian cities, including Bangkok, Hanoi, Kuala Lumpur, and Jakarta, are also on the list, but their rankings are all above 70. Nestpick analyzed popular cities for entrepreneurship based on indicators such as the existing entrepreneurial ecosystem, quality of life, wages, cost of living, social security, and benefits. Given Silicon Valley’s undisputed status as the global capital of entrepreneurship, it may be a bit surprising that Singapore ranks above San Francisco. San Francisco scores the highest in terms of its startup ecosystem and salary metrics, but it is one of the cities with the lowest rankings for cost of living and quality of life. However, for those who have been following Singapore’s growing emergence as a hub for entrepreneurship and innovation, this ranking may not come as a surprise. Earlier this year, the Global Entrepreneurship Ecosystem Report published by startup Genome stated that Singapore has replaced Silicon Valley as the world’s number one destination favored by entrepreneurial talent. According to The Straits Times, while many companies sometimes struggle to recruit senior software engineers and technical talent in the developing Southeast Asia, Singapore claims to have a pool of experienced young software engineers. Another Forbes contributor noted last year that aside from being one of the richest countries in the world, Singapore also enjoys a highly advantageous geographical location. Thanks to its advanced infrastructure, highly educated workforce (Singapore is said to have the best education system in the world as of 2015), and proximity to several emerging and developed markets, Singapore has become a paradise for technology companies and investors. Based on the aforementioned criteria, Nestpick’s index ranks 85 countries around the world. According to Nestpick, Singapore’s robust startup ecosystem and high scores in healthcare and safety have propelled it to the top of the rankings. The Straits Times noted that the salary of software engineers in Singapore is below the global average of $49,000 per year. However, this drawback may be offset by other benefits mentioned in Nestpick’s research. Omer Kucukdere, Managing Director of Nestpick, explained in a press statement that the company aims to provide resources that go beyond job opportunities and the best employers. For potential cities that professionals might consider working in, we would like to provide an overall overview of these cities. Kücükdere said, “Some cities may offer higher salaries, but after taking taxes and living costs into account, the actual pay might not be that high.” Similarly, professionals should consider the quality of life: is the length of the vacation sufficient to go home? Also, is healthcare as easily accessible as you would like?
