Chinese hickory is mainly produced in the Tianmu Mountain area at the border of Zhejiang and Anhui provinces. Lin’an is one of the regions in China where hickory nuts are produced, and the cultivation and utilization of hickory nuts have a history of over 500 years. Lin’an hickory nuts are renowned at home and abroad for their excellent qualities, including round kernels, thin shells, plump meat, and a crisp, delicious taste. By 2011, the walnut planting area in Hangzhou exceeded 800,000 mu, with an output value of over 2.3 billion yuan. In Lin’an, there were more than 200 walnut processing enterprises of various sizes, with an annual processing capacity of over 30,000 tons and 92,000 employees working in this sector. The hickory nut industry has become a key sector in the rural economy of Lin’an, a major source of income for farmers, and an important part of the development of new rural areas.
