The white heron flower is the flower of the heron grass (Habenaria radiata); it is native to Korea, Taiwan, and Japan. It belongs to the orchid family, and 12 species are known to exist (as cultivated varieties). English name: White Egret Flower; scientific name: Habenaria radiata. Due to its great beauty, excessive harvesting has led to a sharp decline in its population, and it is now considered an endangered plant, ranking third among the top ten most unusual plants. Hydnora africana is a native plant of southern Africa; it typically grows in arid and barren desert areas. This plant grows underground, with its fleshy flowers emerging above the ground, emitting a foul odor similar to that of decayed flesh in order to attract dung beetles and carrion beetles. The true function of those beautiful, bright red flowers is to act as a trap, attracting beetles into them and then trapping them until they die; the flowers absorb the nutrients from the beetles’ corpses. The flowering period is from July to September; the flowers are white, with pedicles that are 20–50 centimeters long, and there are underground stems.
