On November 6th, Beijing time, the Houston Rockets defeated the Utah Jazz 137-110 at home. Chinese player Zhou Qi was given a chance to play in the fourth quarter; within 4 minutes and 39 seconds he made 1 out of 2 shots and converted both free throws, scoring 4 points. 49.1 seconds before the end of the game, he scored his first dunk in his NBA career! This is the fifth time Zhou Qi has gotten a chance to play since joining the NBA; in the previous 4 games, he received a total of 8 playing opportunities, with his only goal coming from a alley-oop pass from a teammate. Today, just 1 minute and 8 seconds into playing, Zhou Qi forced an opponent to commit a foul, earning 2 points from the free throw. Afterwards, he had an opportunity for a fast break, but due to defensive interference, his layup missed. 56.1 seconds before the end of the game, Jazz center Troy Bradley missed a layup, and in the chaos the Rockets secured the rebound and quickly launched a counterattack. Zhou Qi once again made use of his strength in movement; as the tallest player on the court, he rushed forward right away, heading towards the free-throw line. He received a pass from his teammate Demetrius Jackson, made a slight adjustment, then jumped straight up and delivered a brutal two-handed slam dunk, bypassing two defenders in the process! On that shot, the two Jazz players who were in position to defend actually had at least a chance to prevent Zhou Qi from scoring by committing fouls, but they gave up trying to resist under Zhou Qi’s quick reactions and his tall stature. After the goal was scored, thunderous cheers erupted at Toyota Center; surely those Houston fans must have thought of that tall man with yellow skin from ten years ago at that moment.
Zhou Qi is getting better and better – from playing in matches and scoring points to delivering powerful dunks like he did today; he is also improving his coordination with his teammates. . . .
