My factory is equipped with large motors operating at voltages of 6000V to 10000V, as well as several other high-voltage motors. Every time these high-voltage motors start, the lights in the control room flicker, and the DCS screens also experience fluctuations. Could there be any underlying problems or potential hazards associated with this?
It will definitely cause a voltage drop in the local power grid
The motor has a relatively high starting current, which causes a drop in voltage; the voltage returns to normal after starting is complete.
Generally, when carrying out design work, design institutes calculate the voltage drop on the busbars that occurs when large motors start up, in order to determine the extent of the impact on the system. If necessary, soft starters will be added to reduce the impact on the system. If the manager is still worried and willing to spend money, then it’s even better to use a soft start mechanism myself!
