Xiamen, also known as the Egret Island and simply referred to as Egret, is a sub-provincial city in Fujian Province and a special economic zone; its status as a special economic zone was approved on October 7, 1980. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Anhai was a center of literary excellence; a total of 43 scholars passed the imperial examinations there. The county was established in the fourth year of the Jianyan era of the Song dynasty, in 1130 AD. This year marks 888 years since its establishment.
